The BMW M2 Competition F87 is undeniably one of the most capable modern M cars. Out of the box, its compact chassis, rear-wheel-drive layout, and potent S55 twin-turbo inline-six provide a brilliant foundation for performance driving.

However, when pushed to the absolute limit on a race track, the compromises of mass-market engineering become apparent. Built to remain comfortable on the street, the stock F87 quickly reveals thermal bottlenecks, compliant suspension geometry, heavy unsprung mass, and fading brakes under sustained circuit abuse.

At ATOMIC-SHOP, our mission was clear: ignore superficial dyno bragging rights and engineer a thermally bulletproof, razor-sharp track instrument capable of relentless hot laps. The result is a cohesive motorsport build utilizing elite hardware from TTE, GARRETT, EVENTURI, AKRAPOVIČ, ÖHLINS, MILLWAY, ATOMIC BBK, RECARO, and ARD.

Thermal Stability and High-RPM Power: TTE, GARRETT, EVENTURI, and AKRAPOVIČ

The S55 engine boasts immense tuning potential, but chasing peak horsepower is futile if the car cannot maintain thermal stability during a 30-minute track session.

To expand airflow at the top of the rev range without pushing the turbos outside their efficiency window, we installed TTE SW10076.1 TTE740+ Upgrade Turbochargers. This ensures the short-wheelbase chassis receives a linear, predictable power band rather than sudden, unmanageable torque spikes.

To defeat heat soak, charge air cooling was overhauled with a high-capacity GARRETT intercooler. By drastically lowering intake air temperatures (IATs), the ECU maintains optimal ignition timing, guaranteeing consistent corner-exit acceleration lap after lap.

Induction is refined by the EVENTURI EVE-M2C-CF-INT Carbon Intake System. Its sealed Venturi housings protect the intake charge from radiant engine bay heat while smoothing airflow to the turbines.

On the exhaust side, restrictive backpressure is eradicated using the AKRAPOVIČ S-BM/T/3H Slip-On Line Titanium paired with the AKRAPOVIČ E-BM/T/5 Evolution Link Pipe Set Titanium. This ultralight system drops unsprung weight, accelerates gas velocity, and unleashes a visceral motorsport howl.

Note: The Evolution Link Pipe may require specific ECU mapping and alter street-legality depending on local OPF/GPF emission laws.

To safeguard the drivetrain under extreme lateral g-forces, we retrofitted a BMW Motorsport differential cooling assembly. Fluid stability across the board is secured using premium RED LINE OIL 5W50 Motor Oil, RED LINE OIL 75W140 GL-5 Gear Oil, and RED LINE OIL WaterWetter.

Chassis Dynamics & Kinematics: ÖHLINS, EIBACH, and MILLWAY

Engine power is useless without the suspension geometry to deploy it. Factory damping is simply too soft to support the lateral grip of semi-slick tires, leading to excessive body roll and sloppy transient weight transfers.

We addressed this by fitting an ÖHLINS BMS MR40 Road & Track DFV suspension system. Custom-valved and matched with a motorsport-spec EIBACH spring package (140 N/mm primary springs with 26 N/mm tenders), this setup locks down the chassis over aggressive kerb strikes.

To cure factory understeer, we integrated adjustable MILLWAY Camber Plates. Dialing in aggressive negative camber maximizes the tire's contact patch mid-corner, preventing outer shoulder scrubbing and delivering surgical steering precision.

Unsprung Mass and Mechanical Grip: BBS, APEX, and Michelin

Shedding rotational weight is vital for a responsive chassis. Lighter wheels improve both damper reaction times and dynamic feedback under heavy braking.

For this F87, we alternate between ultra-lightweight forged BBS FI137 / FI138 wheels (19x9.5 front / 19x10.5 rear) and track-proven APEX EC-7 wheels in 19x9.5 / 19x11 Race Silver finish.

Tire selection dictates mechanical grip: MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect semi-slicks provide dry-track dominance, while MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport rubber handles unpredictable weather. Track width is perfected using EIBACH Pro-Spacers, secured by motorsport-grade A.I.TECH stud and nut conversions for rapid pit-lane swaps.

Relentless Stopping Power: ATOMIC BBK, AP RACING, and PFC

Braking consistency is the foundation of fast lap times. The factory cast calipers and street friction compounds simply cannot survive high-speed deceleration zones without fading.

Our solution is a custom-engineered ATOMIC BBK built around rigid, forged 6-piston AP RACING CP9668 Radi-CAL calipers. Clamping down on massive 378x35 mm PFC replacement brake rotors via aggressive PFC 331 compound race pads, this setup provides monstrous heat dissipation and allows for quick pad changes.

Hydraulic compliance is eliminated with FISCHER and BMW OEM Stainless Steel Brake Lines, filled with high-boiling-point PFC RH665 Racing Brake Fluid. The result is a rock-hard pedal that inspires total confidence at the limit.

Driver Ergonomics and Safety Hardware

A fast car requires a secure driver. Eliminating body movement in the seat allows the driver to feel the chassis limits and apply precise steering inputs without bracing themselves against the door panels.

We stripped the rear cabin to fit an ARD 4-Point Roll Cage and an ARD Rear Seat Delete Carpet, increasing structural rigidity while shaving weight. Up front, the driver and passenger are locked into fixed-back RECARO Pole Position Seats, tightly secured by SCHROTH PROFI II-FE ASM 4-Point Harnesses and a SCHROTH T-Bar Crutch Strap.

Tactile interface is sharpened with AUTOTECKNIC Competition Steering Shift Levers and prominent AUTOTECKNIC Red M1/M2 Buttons.

Functional Aerodynamics & Carbon Fiber

Exterior upgrades on this build are strictly functional, aimed at shedding pounds and optimizing aerodynamic balance.

Front-end mass is reduced with a BMW OEM Carbon Hood. High-speed rear downforce and clean airflow detachment are supported by a BMW OEM M Performance Carbon Rear Trunk Spoiler and a matte-finish AKRAPOVIČ Rear Carbon Fiber Diffuser. The aggressive aesthetic is finished with AKRAPOVIČ Carbon Fiber Mirror Caps.

Verdict: A Clinical Track Instrument

This F87 build strips away factory compromises to reveal the true potential of the BMW M2 Competition. By systematically upgrading its thermal, structural, and mechanical limits, ATOMIC-SHOP has created a dedicated circuit weapon.
