Unearthing this silver EVO VI RSII from the ATOMIC-SHOP project archives highlights the enduring logic of early-2000s tuning culture. Two decades later, this project demonstrates a fundamental truth: well-engineered hardware choices never lose their relevance.
Instead of compromising the rally-rooted personality of the Lancer Evolution VI, our objective was to sharpen every tactile edge using proven motorsport hardware: quicker boost recovery, reliable intake thermal management, refined shock valving, reduced body roll, relentless brake friction, and ideal driver positioning.
Power Delivery & Thermal Control: EVO9 Turbo and HKS Package
The legendary 4G63T remains one of the most durable turbocharged inline-fours ever created. Featuring a cast-iron block and exceptional structural integrity, it serves as an unbeatable foundation for a track-focused EVO VI platform.
To increase overall airflow while preserving swift boost onset, we replaced the factory unit with an EVO9 Turbocharger. This OEM-plus upgrade route provides enhanced top-end breathing and broader power delivery without introducing lag on corner exits.
To stabilize intake temperatures under sustained full-throttle track conditions, an HKS Intercooler was integrated. Managing charge-air heat avoids heat soak, keeping air-fuel ratios stable and preventing the ECU from pulling ignition timing during hot laps.
Exhaust flow is managed by an HKS Hi-Power Silent Exhaust. By significantly reducing backpressure behind the turbine, this exhaust improves overall turbo efficiency while producing a resonant, period-correct JDM exhaust tone that remains civilized.
Chassis Tuning: ÖHLINS DFV Dynamics & CUSCO Stabilization
While the standard EVO VI platform offers remarkable turn-in agility and extended suspension travel, serious circuit work demands more strict body control and rapid damper stabilization over track curbing.
We overhauled the suspension using an ÖHLINS MIS MI01 Road & Track DFV Damper Kit. Though initially engineered for the newer EVO VII-IX platform, we adapted it to the CP9A chassis via the ÖHLINS MIZ MI00 Adaption Kit.
This cross-generational setup brings ÖHLINS' Dual Flow Valve (DFV) internal valving to the earlier chassis. The DFV mechanism allows the tires to track road imperfections seamlessly, giving the driver immense chassis composure under heavy braking and high-speed directional changes.
To control cornering roll, front and rear CUSCO Sway Bars were installed. Minimizing lateral lean provides a flatter, more stable foundation, enabling the mechanical AWD system to distribute torque effectively across both axles.
Braking Performance: DBA Rotors and ENDLESS MX72 Compound
With heightened engine output and higher entry speeds, the braking hardware must deliver total thermal stability and consistent pedal feel lap after lap.
We upgraded the rotor assembly with high-carbon DBA Brake Discs. Recognized for superior heat dissipation and structural resistance to thermal stress, these rotors serve as a durable anchor for track duty.
Friction duties are handled by ENDLESS MX72 Brake Pads. This versatile track-and-street pad compound delivers immediate initial bite, linear pedal modulation, and strong resistance to brake fade across severe heat cycles.
Cockpit Ergonomics: Direct Tactile Feedback via OMP
The cockpit of the EVO VI RSII is a purpose-built workspace. To enhance steering feel and overall driver confidence, interior modifications focused strictly on optimizing control inputs.
The stock steering wheel was replaced with an OMP OD0-1956-073 Corsica 350mm Steering Wheel wrapped in black and red suede. Its deep dish profile and high-friction surface provide superior grip during aggressive wheel movements.
To refine arm leverage, a custom Steering Wheel Spacer was installed. Bringing the wheel closer to the chest creates an optimal driving position, reducing driver fatigue and allowing faster reactions when correcting oversteer.
